Upcoming BJJ Competition and Jiu Jitsu Tournament Info

Congratulations to Heather Hart and Ansley Cox!

Both ladies brought home the GOLD from IBJJF Master Worlds.

– Interested in competing?

  • Do I have to? Well, no.

I think it’s safe to say that most folks who train BJJ do not compete. It is not necessary to compete in order to climb the ranks in Jiu Jitsu. However, most competitors find a very valuable take away from competing or preparing to compete, even if that don’t walk away with the gold.

We recommend starting local if you’re interested in competing. Here are a few things to consider.

BJJ Tournaments

Check out Smooth Comp https://smoothcomp.com/en is a great way to search for many of the local BJJ tournaments. Creating a profile on Smooth Comp will help you register for any organizer that uses their platform including Grappling Industries, Tap Cancer Out and Newbreed.

Grappling Industries is generally held in Broomall at the Marple Sports Arena. Typically these are a round robin style Jiu Jitsu tournament which means you’re likely to have more matches than you would with a single elimination event.

  • Upcoming Dates include October 15, 2022 and January 7, 2023

Tap Cancer Out is a fundraising tournament held local annually for a great cause. This fall TCO is being held on November 12, 2022 in Hatfield at XL Sports World .

The IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) is less local these days and requires more of your time and financial investment.  Competitors must be registered and the paperwork must be approved. We are happy to help you navigate the process. Hart BJJ team members should sign up under Balance. Paperwork will require dates and signatures so please plan accordingly. Memberships are updated annually and there is typically a higher fee per tournament than you will pay for local promotions. Since Covid, the IBJJF Opens have only gotten as close as Washington DC and New Haven Ct. The Majors would be the Pans, Worlds, No Gi Worlds, No Gi Pans and Master Worlds. For tournaments like these you’re looking at traveling to Florida, California or Nevada.

International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation has long been the standard for rule sets. Many of the tournaments mentioned above follow this rule set for scoring points and what submissions/positions are allowable. Definitely be sure that you look at the rule set and understand them as they can vary.
